Mark 14:1	^aIt was now two days before ^bthe Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes ^cwere seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,	Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.
Mark 14:2	for they said, “Not during the feast, ^dlest there be an uproar from the people.”	‘But not during the festival,’ they said, ‘or the people may riot.’
Mark 14:3	^eAnd while he was at ^fBethany in the house of Simon the leper, ^{▼▼Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13} as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.	While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.
Mark 14:4	There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that?	Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, ‘Why this waste of perfume?
Mark 14:5	For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii ^{▼▼A denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer} and ⁱgiven to the poor.” And they ^jscolded her.	It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages ^{▼▼Greek than three hundred denarii} and the money given to the poor.’ And they rebuked her harshly.
Mark 14:6	But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.	‘Leave her alone,’ said Jesus. ‘Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
Mark 14:7	For ^lyou always have the poor with you, and whenever ^myou want, you can do good for them. But ⁿyou will not always have me.	The poor you will always have with you, ^{▼▼See Deut. 15:11.} and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.
Mark 14:8	^pShe has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand ^qfor burial.	She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.
Mark 14:9	And truly, I say to you, wherever ^rthe gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told ^sin memory of her.”	Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.’
Mark 14:10	^tThen ^uJudas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, ^vwent to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.	Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.
Mark 14:11	And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to ^wbetray him.	They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
Mark 14:12	^xAnd on ^ythe first day of Unleavened Bread, when they ^zsacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”	On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, ‘Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?’
Mark 14:13	And he sent ^aatwo of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him,	So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, ‘Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.
Mark 14:14	and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ^ab‘The Teacher says, Where is ^acmy guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’	Say to the owner of the house he enters, “The Teacher asks: where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”
Mark 14:15	And he will show you ^ada large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.”	He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.’
Mark 14:16	And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.	The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
Mark 14:17	^aeAnd when it was evening, he came with the twelve.	When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
Mark 14:18	And as they were reclining at table and eating, ^afJesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, ^agone who is eating with me.”	While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, ‘Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me – one who is eating with me.’
Mark 14:19	They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”	They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, ‘Surely you don’t mean me?’
Mark 14:20	He said to them, “It is ^ahone of the twelve, ^aione who is dipping bread into the dish with me.	‘It is one of the Twelve,’ he replied, ‘one who dips bread into the bowl with me.
Mark 14:21	For the Son of Man goes ^ajas it is written of him, but ^akwoe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^alIt would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”	The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.’
Mark 14:22	^amAnd as they were eating, he took bread, and after ^anblessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; ^aothis is my body.”	While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take it; this is my body.’
Mark 14:23	And he took a cup, and when he had ^apgiven thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.	Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

Mark 14:30	And ^bcJesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before ^bdthe rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”	‘Truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘today – yes, tonight – before the cock crows twice ^{▼▼Some early manuscripts do not have twice.} you yourself will disown me three times.’
Mark 14:31	But ^bfhe said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.	But Peter insisted emphatically, ‘Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.’ And all the others said the same.
Mark 14:32	^bgAnd they went ^bhto a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”	They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’
Mark 14:33	And he took with him ^biPeter and James and John, and began ^bjto be greatly distressed and troubled.	He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.

Mark 14:37	And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?	Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Simon,’ he said to Peter, ‘are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?
Mark 14:38	^buWatch and ^bvpray that you may not ^bwenter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”	Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.’
Mark 14:39	And again he went away and prayed, ^bxsaying the same words.	Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.
Mark 14:40	And again he came and found them sleeping, for ^bytheir eyes were very heavy, and ^bzthey did not know what to answer him.	When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
Mark 14:41	And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? ^caIt is enough; ^cbthe hour has come. ^ccThe Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.	Returning the third time, he said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.
Mark 14:42	Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”	Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!’
Mark 14:43	^cdAnd immediately, while he was still speaking, ^ceJudas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.	Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
Mark 14:44	Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”	Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: ‘The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.’
Mark 14:45	And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, ^cf“Rabbi!” And he ^cgkissed him.	Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, ‘Rabbi!’ and kissed him.
Mark 14:46	And they laid hands on him and seized him.	The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
Mark 14:47	But one of those who stood by drew his ^chsword and struck the servant ^{▼▼Greek bondservant} of the high priest and cut off his ear.	Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
Mark 14:48	And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?	‘Am I leading a rebellion,’ said Jesus, ‘that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?
Mark 14:49	^cjDay after day I was with you in the temple ^ckteaching, and you did not seize me. But ^cllet the Scriptures be fulfilled.”	Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.’
Mark 14:50	^cmAnd they all left him and fled.	Then everyone deserted him and fled.
Mark 14:51	And a young man followed him, with nothing but ^cna linen cloth about his body. And they seized him,	A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him,
Mark 14:52	but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.	he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Mark 14:53	^coAnd ^cpthey led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together.	They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together.
Mark 14:54	^cqAnd ^crPeter had followed him at a distance, ^csright into ^ctthe courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with ^cuthe guards and ^cvwarming himself at the fire.	Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
Mark 14:55	Now the chief priests and the whole council ^{▼▼Greek Sanhedrin} were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.	The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.
Mark 14:56	^cxFor many bore false witness against him, but their testimony ^cydid not agree.	Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
Mark 14:57	And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,	Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:
Mark 14:58	^cz“We heard him say, ^da‘I will destroy this temple ^dbthat is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, ^dcnot made with hands.’”	‘We heard him say, “I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.”’
Mark 14:59	Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.	Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
Mark 14:60	And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” ^{▼▼Or Have you no answer to what these men testify against you?}	Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, ‘Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?’
Mark 14:61	But ^dehe remained silent and made no answer. ^dfAgain the high priest asked him, “Are you ^dgthe Christ, the Son of ^dhthe Blessed?”	But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?’
Mark 14:62	And Jesus said, “I am, and ^diyou will see the Son of Man ^djseated at the right hand of Power, and ^dkcoming with the clouds of heaven.”	‘I am,’ said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.’
Mark 14:63	And the high priest ^dltore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need?	The high priest tore his clothes. ‘Why do we need any more witnesses?’ he asked.
Mark 14:64	You have heard ^dmhis blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they ^dnall condemned him as ^dodeserving death.	‘You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?’ They all condemned him as worthy of death.
Mark 14:65	^dpAnd some began ^dqto spit on him and ^drto cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him ^dswith blows.	Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, ‘Prophesy!’ And the guards took him and beat him.
Mark 14:66	^dtAnd as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came,	While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came by.
Mark 14:67	and seeing Peter ^duwarming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”	When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. ‘You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,’ she said.
Mark 14:68	But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway ^{▼▼Or forecourt} and ^dwthe rooster crowed. ^{▼▼Some manuscripts omit and the rooster crowed}	But he denied it. ‘I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,’ he said, and went out into the entrance. ^{▼▼Some early manuscripts entrance and the cock crowed}
Mark 14:69	And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”	When the servant-girl saw him there, she said again to those standing round them, ‘This fellow is one of them.’
Mark 14:70	But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”	Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, ‘Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.’
Mark 14:71	But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”	He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, ‘I don’t know this man you’re talking about.’
Mark 14:72	And immediately the rooster crowed ^dza second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, ^ea“Before the rooster crows twice, you will ^ebdeny me three times.” And he broke down and wept. ^{▼▼Or And when he had thought about it, he wept}	Immediately the cock crowed the second time. ^{▼▼Some early manuscripts do not have the second time.} Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: ‘Before the cock crows twice ^{▼▼Some early manuscripts do not have twice.} you will disown me three times.’ And he broke down and wept.
Mark 15:1	^efAnd as soon as it was morning, the chief priests ^egheld a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And ^ehthey bound Jesus and ^eiled him away and ^ejdelivered him over to ^ekPilate.	Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
Mark 15:2	^elAnd Pilate asked him, ^em“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, ^en“You have said so.”	‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ asked Pilate. ‘You have said so,’ Jesus replied.
Mark 15:3	And the chief priests accused him of many things.	The chief priests accused him of many things.
Mark 15:4	And Pilate again asked him, ^eo“Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.”	So again Pilate asked him, ‘Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.’
Mark 15:5	But Jesus ^epmade no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.	But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
Mark 15:6	^eqNow at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.	Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.
Mark 15:7	And among the rebels in prison, who had ^ercommitted murder ^esin the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.	A man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder in the uprising.
Mark 15:8	And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.	The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
Mark 15:9	And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”	‘Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?’ asked Pilate,
Mark 15:10	For he perceived that ^etit was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.	knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.
Mark 15:11	But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.	But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to get Pilate to release Barabbas instead.
Mark 15:12	And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with ^euthe man you call the King of the Jews?”	‘What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?’ Pilate asked them.
Mark 15:13	And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”	‘Crucify him!’ they shouted.
Mark 15:14	And Pilate said to them, “Why? ^evWhat evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”	‘Why? What crime has he committed?’ asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, ‘Crucify him!’
Mark 15:15	So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having ^ewscourged ^{▼▼A Roman judicial penalty, consisting of a severe beating with a multi-lashed whip containing imbedded pieces of bone and metal} Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.	Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
Mark 15:16	^eyAnd the soldiers led him away inside ^ezthe palace (that is, ^fathe governor’s headquarters), ^{▼▼Greek the praetorium} and they called together the whole ^fcbattalion. ^{▼▼Greek cohort; a tenth of a Roman legion, usually about 600 men}	The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.
Mark 15:17	And they clothed him in ^fea purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.	They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.
Mark 15:18	And they began to salute him, ^ff“Hail, King of the Jews!”	And they began to call out to him, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’
Mark 15:19	And they were striking his head with a reed and ^fgspitting on him and ^fhkneeling down in homage to him.	Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spat on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.
Mark 15:20	And when they had ^fimocked him, they stripped him of ^fjthe purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they ^fkled him out to crucify him.	And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
Mark 15:21	^flAnd they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.	A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.
Mark 15:22	^fmAnd they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).	They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means ‘the place of the skull’).
Mark 15:23	And they offered him wine mixed with ^fnmyrrh, but he did not take it.	Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
Mark 15:24	And they crucified him and ^fodivided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.	And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.
Mark 15:25	And ^fpit was the third hour ^{▼▼That is, 9 a.m.} when they crucified him.	It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.
Mark 15:26	And the inscription of the charge against him read, ^fr“The King of the Jews.”	The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.
Mark 15:27	And with him they crucified two ^fsrobbers, ^ftone on his right and one on his left. ^{▼▼Some manuscripts insert verse 28: And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “He was numbered with the transgressors”}	They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [
Mark 15:29	And ^fvthose who passed by derided him, ^fwwagging their heads and saying, ^fx“Aha! ^fyYou who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,	Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, ‘So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,
Mark 15:30	save yourself, and come down from the cross!”	come down from the cross and save yourself!’
Mark 15:31	So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, ^fz“He saved others; ^gahe cannot save himself.	In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. ‘He saved others,’ they said, ‘but he can’t save himself!
Mark 15:32	Let ^gbthe Christ, ^gcthe King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may ^gdsee and believe.” ^geThose who were crucified with him also reviled him.	Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.’ Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
Mark 15:33	And when the sixth hour ^{▼▼That is, noon} had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. ^{▼▼That is, 3 p.m.}	At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
Mark 15:34	And at the ninth hour Jesus ^ghcried with a loud voice, ^gi“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”	And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ (which means ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ ). ^{▼▼Psalm 22:1}
Mark 15:35	And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”	When some of those standing near heard this, they said, ‘Listen, he’s calling Elijah.’
Mark 15:36	And someone ran and filled a sponge with ^gksour wine, put it on a reed ^gland gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”	Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. ‘Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,’ he said.
Mark 15:37	And Jesus ^gmuttered a loud cry and ^gnbreathed his last.	With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

Mark 15:41	When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ^gzministered to him, and there were also many other women who ^hacame up with him to Jerusalem.	In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.

Mark 15:43	Joseph of Arimathea, ^hda respected member of the council, who ^hewas also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Mark 16:7	But go, tell his disciples and Peter that ^ibhe is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, ^icjust as he told you.”	But go, tell his disciples and Peter, “He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.”’
Mark 16:8	And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Mark 16:14	Afterward ^iqhe appeared ^irto the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their ^isunbelief and ^ithardness of heart, because ^iuthey had not believed those who saw him after he had risen.	Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
Mark 16:15	And he said to them, ^iv“Go into all the world and ^iwproclaim the gospel to ^ixthe whole creation.	He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
Mark 16:16	^iyWhoever believes and is ^izbaptized ^jawill be saved, but ^jbwhoever ^jcdoes not believe will be condemned.	Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Mark 16:18	^jgthey will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; ^jhthey will lay their hands ^jion the sick, and they will recover.”	they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on people who are ill, and they will get well.’
Mark 16:19	So then the Lord Jesus, ^jjafter he had spoken to them, ^jkwas taken up into heaven and ^jlsat down at the right hand of God.	After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.
